Result: 1-14 to 1-15

Minor C Football Championship  Round 3 Sunday 9th October 2016

Ballyboden St Enda’s 1-14 to Erins Isles 1-15

Boden had to win this game to go through to the Semis so the lads knew they had to give it their best & they certainly did. A lovely sunny October morning in Finglas with perfect conditions & everything was set for a cracking game which it proved to be.  It was always going to be a difficult assignment as we were up against a very strong first team who had won all of their league matches. And so the game started with Erins Isle on the front foot & despite good defending by Boden we were 5 pts to 1 down after 15 mins, our only point coming from midfield dynamo Rob Donohue. We were finding it very hard to get scores as attack after attack broke down, then Ross McCormack grabbed a point for Boden followed by a goal & point from Erins Isle, which left us trailing by 1-6 to 2 pts after 20 odd minutes. But the next 10 minutes belonged to Boden who scored the next 5 points before half time with 2 frees from Ben Kelly & a point by Daniel O’Riordan on the run & a couple of beauties from Rob Donohue again. Half time score 1-7 to 7 pts as Erins Isles grabbed one just before the break, all the while the Boden defence were holding out the Isles forwards.

The 2nd half began as the 1st with Isles getting the 1st 3 points to put 6 between them again but Boden were not going to lie down & now really beginning to move well with points from Daniel O’Riordan 2 & Ryan Bradshaw 1. At this stage of the game the Isles were very dangerous on the break & they got a penalty which Jack Kelly saved brilliantly, the next couple of points were traded evenly with Ben Kelly getting 1 for Boden. With 8 minutes left Boden were really on top with Rob Donoghue able assisted by Michael O’Brien & Ronan Wallace winning ball after ball around the middle & it paid off as Ross McCormack got a ball on the edge of the square and was squarely foot blocked for a penalty. Up stepped Rob Donohue again & although the goalie saved he managed to get the rebound into the net, now we had a 2 point game. Kevin Lawlor who had just come on as a sub grabbed the next point  & we were down to 1. Isles were now worried & struggled to get a point, but Boden struck back for 2 of their own one each by Tommy Glynn, a beauty on the run & Eogham McGarvey to level it, unfortunately in a frantic finish Isles grabbed the last point to win by 1, a fantastic effort by this group of which 12 of the starting 15 are next year Minors also.

The full back line was outstanding throughout with Rob Keegan, Ruairi Hester & Shane Bobbett being tenacious in the tackle & launching drives forward assisted by the wing backs Tommy Glynn & Jamie Dooney. Ciaran Cashman & Luke Bolger made many darting runs to help launch attacks from the half forward line with the full forward line of Eoghan Buckley. Ross McCormack & Daniel O’Riordan causing Isles lots of problems & overall the team gave an outstanding display of football showing great spirit with good teamwork despite losing out by a single pint.
