Senior A vs Na Fianna
Saturday, 22nd July 2017

Result: 1 15 to 1 09

Ballyboden St Endas travelled to Mobhi Road for their Division 1 League tie round 9 match against Na Fianna on Saturday 22nd July. Conditions were very good for this top of the table clash – a sunny evening and a firm surface underfoot.

Boden started brightly and a good diagonal ball sent in to Paul Ryan gave him the opportunity to test the defence. He found the space and sprinted past his opposite number, picked his spot on the far post and the ball nestled in the net. Na Fianna responded with a pair of points before Paul Doherty sent the ball over the bar for Boden’s second score. High workrate was a feature of the Boden defence with Luke Corcoran, Shane Durkin and James Holland restricting the home side to long range efforts. Conal Keaney was having a storming match, winning puckouts and a share of frees, before he put over two in a row to give Boden a slender lead. It was clear that this was going to be a tussle of huge proportions, with a large section of the match being played out in the middle third of the field. Blocking and hooking by both sides was well executed and further scores were at a premium. A Conor Dooley free and a Shane Durkin point from distance left the sides equal at the break on a scoreline of Boden 1-06 & Na Fianna 1-06.

The third quarter of the match was probably Boden’s most impressive. The workrate went up a notch and while scoring chances were still hard to manufacture, Boden imposed themselves on the match with good work by James Roche and Conal Keaney and great tidying up in defence by Corcoran, Colm Ó’Néill and Simon Lambert. A pair of Lambert frees and a Paul Doherty point gave Boden the advantage going in to the last quarter. Goalkeeper Gary Maguire made some key interventions as the clock ticked on and his distribution was top class. Up front the Conor’s – Dooley and McCormack – were battling hard. Dooley’s three points from placed balls took the visitors out of reach but more impressive was the non-concession by Boden of any score in the last quarter. Final score Boden 1-15 Na Fianna 1-9. A very satisfying win for all involved and a result that keeps Boden’s interest in this Division 1 race alive. After the early August break, the next match is against All-Ireland champions Cuala, set for the 19th August.
