Senior vs Cuala
Sunday, 15th July 2018

Result: 1-11 to 1-12

Played on a rock-hard pitch, this was always going to be a testing venture for the visiting side. And, so it proved. Cuala settled quickly and, with the majority of the early possession, had two points on the board (1 free) before Sam Molony popped over a point. Cuala quickly cancelled out this score but it could have been much worse but for a brilliant save by Darragh Gogan that eventually ended as a point for the home team. Sam again pointed for Boden but Cuala managed two points in reply (1 free). Two pointed frees by Barra McGarry and one from play brought the sides level with five minutes to go to half time. However, in the remaining minutes of the half Cuala scored another three points without reply to leave the half time score at 8 points to five for Cuala.

Cuala scored the first point of the second half and could have added a goal but for good positioning by Kieran Kennedy to prevent a goal with Darragh Gogan beaten. A couple of minutes later, a free by Barra McGarry, dropping short, was caught by Darren O’Reilly and clinically finished to the net. However, the visitors joy was short lived as, following a heavy tackle on one of their players inside the large square, Cuala were awarded a penalty which was duly converted. A point by Darren O’Reilly was followed by two more points by Cuala to leave them five points ahead with 10 minutes left to play. Those 10 minutes were the most productive for Boden as they scored five points without reply, Ross McGarry (2 frees), Darren O’Reilly, John Murphy and Kieran Kennedy, to bring the sides level with time running out. In this period, a number of other chances were missed by Boden which might have brought a win but with time almost up, Cuala worked the ball up the field and earned themselves a 45 well out to the right of the goals. To the joy of the home team and supporters, the free kick sailed over the bar and the final whistle blew shortly after with the home team winning by the narrowest of margins.
