Minor A vs Kilmacud Crokes
Sunday, 18th November 2018

Result: 2-07 to 1-09

Sunday morning saw Ballyboden travel to Silver Park to take on Kilmacud in the championship semi-final. Conditions were bright and sunny with a breeze blowing towards the dressing room end. Ballyboden won the toss and elected to play with the breeze in the first half. Early exchanges saw Ballyboden on top but the Kilmacud defence was preventing any clear scoring chances. At the other end, the Ballyboden backs were also limiting any clear chances for the hosts. A low scoring first half saw points from Luke McDwyer, Mark Walsh, Ciaran O’Reilly and John McGinn give Boden a one point lead at half time.

The half time message was to continue with the tremendous effort of the first half and it was very clear that the players were determined to continue in this vein.

An early free from Kilmacud levelled matters but a few minutes later, Peter Gannon rose highest in the goalmouth to superbly flick the ball to the Kilmacud net. The high intensity of the match was very clear with the large crowd encouraging both sets of players in their efforts. A Kilmacud point was followed by a goal to give them a narrow lead. The Boden team responded brilliantly with Luke McDwyer showing blistering pace to finish to the net despite a heavy challenge from the home goalkeeper. Great pressure was exerted by the Ballyboden backs with Kevin Desmond, Cillian Kirwan and Sean O’Donnell tackling with great discipline while the half back line of Conor Hanrahan, Patrick Dunleavy and Cian Maher were covering large areas of the Silver Park pitch. At midfield, Mark Walsh and Conor Lowe were having a titanic battle with their opponents to ensure a supply of ball to the forwards.

Enda Cashman was getting on a lot of ball with his distribution leading to a point for Ciaran O’Reilly followed by a converted free by Peter Gannon. Kilmacud responded with well taken points to level the match once again. Jake Turley in goal was extremely vigilant during this period of Kilmacud pressure. David Ward and Malachy Codd were both working hard following their introduction while Kenny and Dean Ralph came off the bench to great effect as both sides strained every muscle to get an advantage. A break upfield by Ballyboden saw Conor Hanrahan point brilliantly to restore the lead. Magnificent defending in the closing minutes prevented any further Kilmacud scores to ensure a one point victory for Ballyboden at the final whistle to the delight of the large Ballyboden support.

Well done to all the Ballyboden players for a tremendous team effort in the game. Congratulations to both teams for the spirit in which the match was played. Thanks to the parents and the travelling Boden support who gave great encouragement to the team throughout the match.

The win means the team has qualified for the championship final against Whitehall Colmcille with the date and venue to be confirmed this week.

We wish our injured squad members a speedy return to full fitness.
