Boden players feature in Terenure College Championship win

[ Wednesday, 17th November 2010 ]

Terenure College won the Dublin Schools Junior C Hurling Championship for the first time on Monday afternoon 15th November 2010 in O’Toole Park against local rivals Templeogue College.

Boden players featured strongly in the victory with Ben McEntee, Kenneth & Owen Wigglesworth, Robert McNamee, Evan McDonald, James Roche & Gareth Crowley all playing their part.

Templeogue started the better of the two sides with Chris Bennett quickly putting three points on the scoreboard. However, Terenure kept in touch with three frees from captain James Roche.  Templeogue raised the green flag with a long range effort from centre half forward Eoin Walsh on the quarter hour. However, with the Wigglesworth brothers Owen and Kenneth to the fore, Terenure’s defence began to get on top towards the end of the first half. It was at this stage of the game that Niall O’Sullivan and Daire Kerr tagged on a brace of points to keep Terenure in touch and leave the half-time score Terenure 0-07 to Templeogue’s 1-09.

The half-time team talk certainly paid off and Terenure started the second half brightly, a feature of which was a skilfully-kicked point from Jake Swaine.  Then a high ball in from midfield was controlled by Roche who fired a low shot to the corner of the Templeogue net. Terenure were on a roll at this stage and by the 45-minute mark were 1-11 to 1-09 ahead. Prominent among Terenure’s ranks were Ben McEntee, who won great turnover ball as well as Harrison Brewer, who was always there at the breakdown.

Templeogue refused to lie down however and fought back to parity with frees from midfielder Robert Power. The match was balanced on a knife-edge as the game entered the final ten minutes, with full-back Adam Hogan repelling many Templeogue attacks. Again, Terenure raised the bar and with O’Sullivan winning a number of puckouts began to put pressure on the Templeogue defence.  There was one point in it for Terenure entering injury time and the supporters were anxiously looking at their watches. Templeogue threw men forward for the equalising score, but Terenure finished the stronger and closed out the game with points from Tom Walsh and Roche. Final score Terenure College 1-18 to Templeogue College 1-13.

It was a wonderful finish to a pulsating contest that kept the crowd enthralled to the final whistle.

Congratulations to the lads on a great win and many thanks to Mr. Traolach Martin and his coaching staff.
