Feile na nGael Division Four 2017

[ Wednesday, 3rd May 2017 ]

Division Four Runners Up, Feile na nGael.

The under 14 B team met on Saturday morning at 8.15am for the team photograph. They all looked so smart and professional in their tracksuits.  It was a damp morning but the spirits were running high with anticipation and excitement.  We had a 45 minute drive ahead of us over to our hosts St Maurs of Rush, Co. Dublin. We arrived in convoy and parked the cars thinking it was going to be a hard day ahead of us.....the 3 teams we were facing are the top three teams in the League so the boys knew each match was going to be a tough battle. The teams lined up beside each other and the President of St Maurs welcomed the four teams as well as the supporters to the club for a great day of hurling.

The first match was against O’Tooles. Having won the toss and choosing to play with the wind, the boys  were poised in their positions ready for the first strike of the sliotar and when it was struck they charged into battle. We, the spectators, were treated to a fabulous game of hurling and what a start to Feile 2017!!

Match 1 - BBSE 3-6 (15) v 0-7 (7) O'Tooles

The second match we knew was going to be tough. BBSE had played them the week before and the team had been battered by Counsel Gaels, our next opponents. The boys got into position to brace themselves for a hard game ahead. Our boys did our club proud for the next 20 minutes. They won every ball and they defended like true soldiers with another  fantastic result.

Match 2 - BBSE 3-8 (17) v 1-5 (8)  Counsel Gaels

With a semi-final place secured, the mentors knew it was all about managing playing time, so they could face the semi-final as fresh as possible and ensure all the panel had game time. The team understood the strategy and played valiantly throughout in a tough battle with the favourites St Maurs.

Match 3 - St Maurs 6-3 (21) v 1-2 (5) BBSE

We set out to Thomas Davis, Kiltipper Road for the Semi Final against St Kevin’s HC ( yet another team ahead of us in the League! ) We arrived at Kiltipper Road and gained more support from family and friends who were delighted to come down the road to see our local heroes.

The boys were in position and were ready for battle again for the fourth time that day. And they did not disappoint themselves or their supporters. They dug deep and fought and defended and deserved every score they made. The B team worked hard for a wonderful result to beat St Kevin’s and to go through to the final against the favourites St. Maurs

Semi Final BBSE 3-5 (14) v 2-0 (6) St Kevin’s HC

The next morning, we arose to a damp and windy morning. The team met at the Clubhouse to make sure everyone was accounted for. The boys were sore and weary from the day before but they were excited and truly hoped that they would succeed in Blakestown and surprise everyone!  The Boden community did not disappoint and the boys had huge numbers of supporters who made plenty of noise as the match started. They were up a point at half time. The boys played out of their skins but were not able to match some of the skill of St Maurs.

At the end of the day the result didn’t matter because every single boy on that team gave 110% and the mentors and parents were rewarded with a great weekend of hurling that the B team, their mentors and their family will never forget.
