Minor B Hurlers win top of the table clash with Naomh Jude

[ Friday, 1st July 2011 ]

Report by Joe Roche

The Minor B hurlers had a great win on Tuesday 28th June in the penultimate league match against St Judes in Tymon Park. With both teams going well in Division 2, a win was vital to keep their hopes of League honours on track. Matches between these rivals have always been close affairs and on a beautiful sunny evening the game began with both teams slow to get into their stride.

James Roche had Boden off the mark with a series of frees but the concession of a goal midway through the half brought Judes into the game. At the short whistle, there was the minimum in it with Boden ahead by 0-7 to 1-3. A feature of the half were great midfield play by Ben McEntee & Eoin McKenna who won a series of puckouts and superb defending by Kenneth Wigglesworth and Conor Maher. Judes edged ahead in the third quarter but a point from Chris Lambert and a great long range effort from Conor Bolger having won the ball in the half back line had Boden within a point.

Judes then had their best spell and were winning most contests in the air. It did not look good for the men in blue & white. A break upfield led to a foul and following a deflected penalty save, Conor McKeon fired in a 65 to the goalmouth where Keith McCarron got a flick to rattle the net - all square going into injury time. With the clock ticking down, a long ball from Fionn Maguire found Roche on the edge of the square. As the large support held their breath, he rounded the corner back and placed the ball beyond the reach of the netminder.

A great cheer went up and shortly afterwards, the final whistle sounded. Final score Boden 2-9 St Judes 1-9.

Well done to both teams for a well-contested match & thanks to the large support that travelled to Tymon. As the lads said at half-time, this one was for Eugene ! Particular thanks to management of the related hurling teams - Minor, U16 and Junior - for their support - much appreciated. The team plays their final league match next Monday against Naomh Fionnbarra on the prunty pitch.
