St Colmcilles CS in epic contest

[ Wednesday, 31st March 2010 ]

St Colmcille's C.S 1 :19     St Joseph's Rochfordbridge 1: 19   (after extra time)

What a contest. It took a a long while for the nerves to settle again after this nail biting Leinster 'C' Hurling Final last Friday. Both teams can feel disappointed not to have walked away victorious with victory staring them both in the eye.

The Knocklyon outfit were anything but impressive in the first fifteen minutes but when the flow returned to their game they produced some outstanding hurling. St. Joseph's were never allowed to settle at any stage despite going five points up in the first half.  Kane O'Doherty goaled just before half time and Kevin O'Keefe added some excellent points in this period before half time where Colmcille's dominated .
The second half was of a higher standard with some excellent spells from both teams . The heart and determination shown by the Dublin school was quite remarkable, the half back line of  Eoin Small, Alan O'Connell and Cathal O'Connor were solid throughout.
David Garry proved a real handful for the Joseph's defence and his catching was quite incredible. Gary produced an incredible second half performance and caught ball after ball out of the sky. It was not only Gary who caused trouble for Josephs but the sublime Brian Mc Carthy advertised his exquisite talents scoring a massive seven points from play. Mc Carthy's touch and speed were a joy to watch.  Eoin Small was commanding at centre back after a rusty start. He lead the team throughout the extra time period despite narrowly missing a last minute free in normal time. His passion and drive were an example to all. Paul Doherty was introduced as a substitute and scored a tidy point. The game edged and flowed throughout extra time and a draw was perhaps a fair result.
