U11 Boys Hurling...2017 Dermot McNulty Tournament Champions!

For most, the May bank holiday is a day to relax, pray for some sunshine and perhaps enjoy a bit of gardening or engage in some other leisurely pursuit.
But for the U11 boys it was never going to be a day of rest. Instead, it was a day of intense competition as they took part in the Annual Dermot McNulty Hurling Tournament organised by Na Fianna. Ballyboden has done reasonably well in this tournament in the past and two teams competing for the cup and shield were quietly determined to do themselves and their club proud.
But first they had to play group games against very strong teams representing Na Fianna, St Vincents, Cuala, Whitehall Colmcille, Setanta and Coolderry.
Both teams came out of the blocks at a blistering pace and by playing magnificent hurling they sailed through the group stages, with both qualifying for their respective finals.  The BBSE  cup team were up against the mighty Coolderry boys from Offaly who had narrowly beaten our boys in the final group match, while the BBSE shield team, having gone through the group stage unbeaten, were matched against a very strong squad from Ballymun’s Setanta club.
The two finals, run at the same time, were truly epic. All teams put on a brilliant display of top class hurling played in front of a large group of enthusiastic supporters. In the dying moments there was nothing to separate the finalists as goals and points were traded with abandon.  But there was something special about these two BBSE teams as they battled like tigers right to the final whistle and never giving an inch. Cue for great celebrations at the final whistle as both teams emerged victorious.
This is the first competition win for the U11 boys and they did it in great style, showcasing all that is best about the U11 squad. They did themselves, their parents and club proud and have lots to look forward to as they progress through the year. Many thanks to Na Fianna who organised a great tournament and provided wonderful hospitality and catering to all the visiting teams.
Many thanks to Eamonn Gormley for the photos. For more photos see here
