William Phelan Cup returns to Ballyboden

[ Tuesday, 25th April 2017 ]

A group of thirty four boys travelled to Waterford last Sunday to take part in the William Phelan Cup, an annual event in memory of William Phelan, a great friend and supporter of Ballyboden St Enda’s. Liam, Willie’s son organised the itinerary which included a tour of the Fire Brigade Station, a couple of matches and some surfing on the beautiful beach at Trá Mhór.

The William Phelan Cup took place on the main pitch at McGinn Park where players like Paul Flynn and Pauric Mahoney honed their skills as juvenile hurlers. Once the sliotar was thrown in there was no quarter asked or given as the Dublin lads were welcomed to the country in the traditional fashion! Ballygunner were quick of the mark and were rewarded after only a few minutes when they rattled the back of the  net – if the Boden lads didn’t realise that they were in for a tough contest, they got the message fairly lively. However these bunch of boys are not easily rattled and the same self-belief that saw them turn over Cill Mochuda na Crócaigh in Deer Park on Saturday brought them back into the match. Leon Kennedy chipped in with a couple of frees before John Farrington hit the back of the net and the boys were now in the driving seat.  Ballygunner fought hard and scored a few great points from play not to mention some excellent free taking but further points from play from Stephen Pullan, Seán O’Shea and Sam Doyle and a couple of goals from Daniel Daly and Eoin Mac Pháidín helped Baile Buadáin Naomh Éanna win the William Phelan Cup and bring it back to Dublin.

The cup was presented by Bridie Phelan to our Captain on the day, Evan Nugent. We were delighted that the second team also managed to win the shield competition, by the slimmest of margins, in a tight contest.

There were plenty of sore limbs aprés match however no ice baths were required here as the lads headed straight off to the Celtic sea for a plunge and a bit of surfing.

Ba mhaith linn ár mbuíochas ó chroí a ghlacadh le CLG Bhaile Mhic Gunair agus go speisialta le Liam Phelan as an aire iontach a thug sé dúinn.
